Precision Climate Control for Industrial Pasta Drying
When it comes to high-quality pasta production, the drying phase is where the magic—or the disaster—happens. Too much heat causes cracking; too much moisture leads to spoilage. To solve this, we recently engineered and deployed a custom Automation Cabinet to bring laboratory-grade precision to the factory floor.
The Challenge
Managing the "Perfect Dry"
Our client needed to move away from manual monitoring and inconsistent climate control. In a production line, even a 2% deviation in humidity can compromise an entire batch. They required a system that was:
Rugged: Capable of withstanding industrial environments.
Precise Real-time tracking of Temperature and Relative Humidity (%RH).
Scalable: Able to manage multiple drying chambers effectively.
Our Solution: The Siemens S7-1200 Ecosystem
We designed a control architecture centered around the Siemens S7-1200 PLC. This "brain" allows for sophisticated logic handling while maintaining an incredibly small footprint in the electrical cabinet.
Technical Highlights:
- Controller: Siemens S7-1200 CPU for high-speed logic and process control.
- Sensors: High-precision Modbus RTU sensors by Galltech & Mela. By utilizing Modbus, we were able to daisy-chain sensors, reducing wiring costs and ensuring digital accuracy without the signal degradation found in standard 4-20mA loops.
- Automation Logic: The system manages fans, heaters, and dampers to follow a specific "drying curve" tailored to different pasta shapes.
- Realtime and historian charts: With build in logger now the process can be monitored and analyze drying curves for quality inspection and continues improvements.
- Remote Access & Monitor: The system can be monitored and controlled fully remote by accessing a secure channel via a VPN connection.
- Key Benefit: The use of Modbus RTU allowed us to place sensors deep inside the drying chambers while keeping the PLC safely in the cabinet, ensuring noise-free data transmission.
The Results
The transition from manual oversight to automated control yielded immediate ROI for the production line:
Metric | Before Automation | After Automation |
Consistency | Batch-to-batch variance | Identical results every time |
Energy Use | Fans/Heaters run 24/7 | Demand-based cycling |
Monitoring | Manual logbooks | Real-time digital dashboard |
Consistency isn't just a goal it's a requirement.
